Who am I?

My name is Kevin Birnbaum. I’m a Catholic, a husband, a father, a friend, a writer, a singer, a baker of cookies. I’m a Chicagoan by birth, a Seattleite by adoption, a journalist by trade, and a child of God by grace. I love beauty, truth, and goodness and wish I were better at them. Sometimes I have opinions, but more often I have questions.

Why the candle?

There are so many good things in the world. But the bad things seem to get so much more attention—on the news, in smalltalk, and especially on blogs.

I don’t have the time to keep up a running critical commentary on current events. I don’t have the stomach for endless streams of snark. I don’t have the energy to rage day after day against the evils of our culture. And sometimes I need a break those kinds of blogs.

I want the candle to be a refuge, an oasis, one small light shining in the darkness—a place where beauty, truth, and goodness are celebrated, pondered, basked in. This blog will take its direction from St. Paul:

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Phil 4:8)
